Your Digital Business Card
Domain names are extremely important for businesses. A domain name is a business's identity and address online. Without one, a business is just renting space. A domain name gives a business its own premises and voice online.
Offline, domain names work well on physical advertising: billboards, signage, print. But they also travel by word of mouth, spoken aloud in conversation like a virtual business card, passed from person to person.
Once upon a time, at the end of a meeting, business partners would exchange business cards. Today, that's almost unnecessary if you have a great domain name.
"Great chatting with you, what's the best way to reach you?" asks Peter.
"Just head to titus.com.au," replies Alan.
No more swapping business cards full of phone and fax numbers. Everything's there at titus.com.au, which Peter will likely remember later anyway.
A great domain is just as valuable for word-of-mouth endorsements.
"Hey Jim, who do you use for your bond cleans?" asks Mary.
"I always use Dream Clean, they're amazing. You'll find them at dreamclean.com.au," replies John.
Mary is likely to remember that address later, the rhyme makes it stick. Or she might type it straight into her phone on the spot, since it's easy to spell and unambiguous.
Of course, all this only works for good domain names. It doesn't work nearly as well for names with ambiguous spelling, excessive length, hyphens, or unfamiliar extensions, with a few exceptions.
This gets put to the ultimate test on radio and podcast ads, where a domain name is all a listener hears, with no spelling or visual cue to fall back on. The same goes for voice assistants: asking Siri or Google to "go to" a business only works smoothly if the assistant, and the person asking, can get the name right by ear alone. A domain that survives being spoken aloud, with no second chances, is doing real work as a business card.

Quality
A domain name's quality has the same effect as a business card's: both create an impression of trust and seriousness. High-quality domain names are hard to come by these days, acquiring one takes real investment and a legitimate, ongoing business behind it. A low-effort scam operation is unlikely to be running off a premium, single-word .com.
Memorability
The point of a business card is being easy to contact again later, via its printed details. People aren't good at remembering phone numbers, which is exactly why business cards and vanity phone numbers exist. A great domain name is memorable enough to do the same job, no printing required.
Advantages of a Domain Name Over a Business Card
- One address that can always be updated. A business card has to be reprinted every time a detail changes.
- If a business card is lost, that's probably it. A domain is never lost, it's always just a search away.
- A domain name usually means a website too, so the business shows up in a Google search as well.
- A memorable domain can be found again anytime, long after a business card would have been thrown out.
- Authority and legitimacy: anyone can print a business card, but a good domain is hard to acquire, and having one signals a serious business.
A good domain is easy to remember. A great domain is hard to forget.
